Mo Millar has a 25-years track record in matters related to the voice. She works mainly with Complete Vocal Technique (CVT), a groundbreaking method with clear and concrete directions. It helps singers, other performing artists and people professionally working with their voice of all styles and levels to efficiently solve technical- and artistic dilemmas. In her work Mo additionally refers to her extended knowledge of Speech & Presentation Techniques (following a career in radio/TV journalism, communications, speech- and media training), studio & stage performance, microphone technique (studio & live), stage presence and interpretation techniques.
Mo introduced Complete Vocal Technique to Switzerland in Spring 2007 and is the first voice professional of Switzerland who's Certified CVT Vocalist (1-year Curriculum for Advanced Vocalists in 2007) as well as Authorized CVT Teacher & Vocal Coach (3-year Curriculum for Voice Professionals 2008-2011) from the Danish-based Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen (DK). She additionally holds an University Degree in Speech & Presentation Techniques for Radio, Television, Print Media & Communications from Fontys University for Applied Science in Tilburg (NL).
Mo keeps on sharing and exchanging her knowledge and skills in a Thinktank of Voice Experts in collaboration with Cathrine Sadolin and other voice researchers. She also participates in specialized voice seminars and other expert gatherings (for example, the upcoming Pan European Voice Conference - PEVOC 9 - in Marseille, France or on auditory pedagogy via the Tomatis method).
Mo provides for private coaching as well as for tailor-made voice training, workshops for music institutes, conservatories, choirs, vocal groups, theatre groups, music teachers, recording studios as well as business companies and international organisations. The Vox Sana voice studios are based downtown Geneva, Switzerland.
Philosophy & Pedagogy
Healthy sound production, artistic development and personal growth form the core of Mo's coaching. The aim is to offer guidance in determining goals and achieve them, whatever your music style or voice activity.
Mo deals with all possible levels - from professionals to amateurs - in various settings, ranging from preparing and/or accompanying studio recordings, concerts or (long-term) touring, acapella groups, theatre performances & other vocal performing arts, schools and music institutes, radio & television presentation as well as commercial presentation (speech, diction & text writing/editing for radio, television & speech writing/editing for general presentations).
Even if you are a beginner or if you've always heard people saying you can't sing or if you think yourself you can't or if you think you are “tone-deaf”, Mo will be able to help you.
Mo runs a Voice Emergency Aid service for people having lost their voice or encountering voice difficulties: a voice extinction - for 95% the result of stress and emotions - can be resolved within' a couple of hours. Sometimes it's necessary to follow up with a programme to re-educate the voice, if necessary in collaboration with fellow professionals (speech therapists/orthophonistes, ENT/ORL-specialists a.o.)
Mo respects the personal goals of everyone at all times and the focus will be put on what you wish to learn, how you wish to sound and on how to bypass dilemmas and voice trouble, using a variety of pedagogical tools to tackle the many different ways of learning (as we're all different :-)).
Mo will never express any judgement on sound or taste for students to develop in an atmosphere of freedom and serenity, the fundaments of self-confidence leading to growth. Mo will keep confidentiality at all times.
Cathrine Sadolin is Director of the Complete Vocal Institute (CVI) in Copenhagen - DK (http://www.completevocalinstitute.com) and is one of the world’s leading voice researchers and instructors. Her research across all vocal styles & voice expression (in collaboration with a.o. senior ENT-expert Julian McGlashan (British Voice Association http://www.british-voice-association.com and Queens Medical Center in Nottingham-UK) has inspired innovative thinking within the field.
Sadolin is the mastermind behind advanced singing techniques, useful for instruction within all musical styles. Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) offers radical new approaches to vocal tuition and consists of 'vocal modes' who, when used in various combinations, cover all musical styles from classical to heavy rock. CVT-techniques are being used to develop technical and artistic skills, to tackle vocal problems, repair worn-out voices, handle voice extinctions - through the Emergency Aid programme - or to provide vocal coaching.
The research into the further development of CVT is an ongoing process, and the method is being continually updated, as new results emerge. Devoting most of her time to this research, Sadolin now supervises a team of highly educated & qualified voice professionals at CVI & abroad - among them Mo Millar - providing workshops, clinics and masterclasses for professionals and semi-professionals all over the world. Occasionally Sadolin travels to give special masterclasses herself.
Complete Vocal Technique (CVT)
is about
* 3 basic principles (keys)
* Support
* Necessary twang
* Avoid muscular tension in jaw or lips
* 4 vocal modes (gears/speeds)
* Neutral
* Curbing
* Overdrive
* Edge
You can compare these 4 modes with the gearing of a car; in gear 1 you better not drive 80 km. p/hour (you can try...for a while :)) and driving 20 km. p/hour in gear 4 won't work either. It works the same way for the voice: certain things you can do in gear 1 (vocal mode "Neutral"), but other things you better not and so you will have to change gear (to for example Overdrive).
* Sound Colour
You can manipulate your sound at 6 different areas in the vocal tract (from the vocal cords in the larynx to the mouth, including the nasal passage), and play with light sound colour going to dark and back, if desired, and hereby obtain great variety in your singing/voice expression.
* Effects
* Distortion
* Creak/Creaking
* Rattle
* Growl
* Grunt
* Screams
* Vocal Breaks
* Added Air to the Voice
* Vibrato
* Ornementation Techniques
Always remember: a sound or an effect itself can never harm your voice, wrong technique can (= constriction). Any kind of sound can be produced in a healthy manner, without hoarseness or pain afterwards, nor voice damage when applying correct technique.
