Welcome to Vox Sana Vocal Education!

Here you'll find all information about the work of Mo Millar as vocal coach, singing teacher, speech coach and voice emergency aid. On the 2nd page of Vox Sana Vocal Education you'll find detailed information about the variety of lessons & sessions she proposes and you can check out client testimonials.

Mo Millar has a 25-years track record in matters related to the voice. She works mainly with Complete Vocal Technique (CVT), a groundbreaking method for voice technique/expression with clear and concrete directions. It helps singers, other performing artists and people professionally working with their voice of all styles and levels to efficiently solve technical- and artistic dilemmas. In her work Mo additionally refers to her extended knowledge of Speech Techniques (following a career in radio/TV journalism, communications, speech- and media training), studio & stage performance, microphone technique (studio & live), stage presence and several interpretation techniques.

Mo is certified in Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) following the 1-year programme for Advanced Vocalists she completed in Utrecht (NL) and additionally holds an University Degree in (Speech for) Radio, Television, Print Media & Communications (Broadcast Media, Print Media & Communications) from Fontys University for Applied Science in Tilburg (NL). She introduced Complete Vocal Technique to Switzerland in 2007 as Swiss representative of the Complete Vocal Institute (CVI), a task her busy agenda no longer allowed her to fulfill.

Mo keeps on updating her knowledge and skills at the CVI-headquarters in Copenhagen (DK) in a specialized 3-year programme for voice professionals in order to uphold the highest possible degree of vocal expertise. She's about to finalize a last cycle of these studies and will soon additionally qualify as CVI-Authorized Voice Instructor/Vocal Coach.

Mo provides for private coaching as well as for tailor-made voice training, workshops for music institutes, conservatories, choirs, vocal groups, theatre groups, music teachers, recording studios as well as companies and international organisations. The Vox Sana voice studios are based downtown Geneva, Switzerland.

Mo's musical references are enormous, going from the classical works and basic jazz to blues, funk & soul (at age 14 glued to her radio every Thursday night for the latest import in Ferry Maat's "Soul Show"), fusion, rock, rhythm & blues, metal, reggae, world, latin and some club house, lounge and techno (preferably the one of her nephew DJ Juan Sachez). Most striking influences include the early Alan Parsons Projects, Beatles, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bonnie Raitt, Carmen McRae, Chaka Kahn (with Rufus), DD Bridgewater, Diane Schuur, Donald Fagen, EWF, Jennifer Weatherly, Fishbone, Herbie Hancock, Incognito, George Clinton, James Brown/Maceo Parker, Janis Joplin, Joyce "Mother's Finest" Kennedy, Keziah Jones, Led Zep, (the early) Level 42, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Living Colour, Marley, Me'shell Ndégéocello, Nat King Cole, Oleta Adams, Pearl Jam, Police, Rosa King, Salif Keita, Sandra St. Victor & Family Stand, Sarah Vaughan, Seal, Skunk Anansie, Steely Dan, Tuck & Patti, the early U2, Yes, Youssou N'dour and many, many more...

Nicolas Wetzell & Mo Millar: busy agendas

The collaboration with Peruvian composer, arraqnger and guitarist Nicolas Wetzell allowed Mo to fully connect with her inner self and discover a more intimate approach to music. Together they developed and arranged a collection of acoustic beauties, made available on the mini-CD "Goin' Basic" (released in 2005; check out the section 'Music' of this website for some sound bites).

This low quality sound bite (recorded at Lake Annecy, France - June 2006) serves to get a basic idea of Mo's acoustic "Blazz" project.

The team of musicians ensuring the BLAZZ line up include Nicolas Wetzell and Guy Nikkels on guitar, Julio D'Santiago on percussion, Julien Gahwiler on bass and Luca Solari on percussion and drums.

The Shift

Her collaborations with people like Luca Solari, Nicolas Wetzell, Dutch/Latin guitarist Guy Nikkels, Dutch drummer David Barker, Venezuelan percussionist Julio D'Santiago, Swiss bass player Julien Gahwiler, "milles-pattes" José-Luis 'Sarten' Asaresi and many others of various musical horizons, broadened Mo's universe significantly. It allowed her to experiment a lot, discover a different approach to music and further build upon various ways of vocal use.

As a follow up, Mo took up the piano again and specialized herself vocally with the Danish vocal pedagoque & voice researcher Cathrine Sadolin (Complete Vocal Technique) in Copenhagen, Denmark. She graduated from the 1-year Curriculum for Advanced Vocalists in 2007, obtaining her certification.

Mo: "There's been a time I lived up to other's expectations, overlooking my fundamentals. That has fundamentally changed. Working fulltime with my voice, putting it at the disposal to those who wish to learn and better understand their own instrument, as well as combining my passion for sound and for the written word with my love for singing & music generates an amazing energy."

Mo created "Vox Sana Vocal Education" and is much in demand as vocal coach, singing teacher, speech coach and voice emergency aid. She continuously perfects her technical & pedagogical knowledge with Cathrine Sadolin and staff at the Complete Vocal Institute (CVI) headquarters in a 3-year programme for Voice Professionals. This track of high level voice studies - started in 2005 with a series of workshops in voice expression on the one hand and CVT on the other hand - will come to its end in Spring 2011.

Philosophy & Pedagogy

Healthy sound production, artistic development and personal growth form the core of Mo's coaching. The aim is to offer guidance in determining goals and achieve them, whatever your music style or voice activity.

Mo deals with all possible levels - from professionals to amateurs - in various settings, ranging from preparing and/or accompanying studio recordings, concerts or (long-term) touring, acapella groups, theatre performances & other vocal performing arts, schools and music institutes, radio & television presentation as well as commercial presentation (speech, diction & text writing/editing for radio, television & speech writing/editing for general presentations).

Mo offers Voice Emergency Aid for people having lost their voice or encountering severe voice difficulty: a voice extinction - for 95% the result of stress and emotions - can be resolved within' a couple of hours. Sometimes it's necessary to follow up with a programme to re-educate the voice. Even if you are new to singing or perhaps think that you are “tone-deaf” and cannot sing at all, Mo will be able to help you.

Mo respects the personal goals of everyone at all times and the focus will be put on what you wish to learn, how you wish to sound and on how to bypass dilemmas and voice trouble, using a variety of pedagogical tools to tackle the many different ways of learning (as we're all different :-)).

Mo will never express any judgement on sound or taste for students to develop in an atmosphere of freedom and serenity, the fundaments of self-confidence leading to growth.

Great CD reviews

Several critics at CDBaby.com among others, as well as the French APAGA (Association for the Promotion of Independent Artists) attributed flattering CD reviews to Mo's mini-album "Goin' Basic". The APAGA, through its website www.tazik.org even paid special tribute to it by making it CD Of The Month in 2006. TAzik writes (in French): "Millar Mo'town" revisits, unplugged and mellow, the 60's-70's in blues-soul mood combined with full sense mezzo-vibrato unfaltering vocal quality. We've got spicy feelings for "Voodoo Music"; the Montreux Jazz Festival isn't far away. Very good stuff. When will her own work be out there?...."

Mo + DiG It 2nd best west CH

Mo and "DiG It" received 1200 public votes in the "Caprices Festival New Talent Tour", resulting into rank 2 of 143 participating western Swiss bands, all aiming at playing the playoff's at Lausanne concert hall "The Docks" in order to be selected for the 2007-edition of the Crans Montana-based Caprices Festival (http://www.orangemusic.ch/caprices/discover.php?sort=loc1). In the voting for the entire Swiss territory Mo and "DiG It" obtained rank 6: the contest bodied a total of 247 bands. Despite this result, Mo and "Dig It" won't be playing "The Docks" Jan. 27th for the "New Talent Tour" playoff's; a 4 member jury decided to select the no. 1, to ignore the no. 2 and to select two artists that ended up no. 53 and no. 75 in the contest..... let's just say: "music bizz is peculiar bizz!" Mo and "DiG It" are simply happy with the votes and take them as a great indicator from the audience.

Guy Nikkels is Mo's nothern European guitar man in the acoustic "Blazz" project. Nikkels is a remarkably gifted guitar man open to a great variety of styles: from intense, hard swinging mainstream-bob oriented jazz to more electric funk-fusion. In his acoustic work with Mo he's known for adding a particular latin touch to the arrangements that bring about a remarkable kind of intimacy with lots of space for improvisation. Nikkels already played and worked with many acclaimed musicians, including the late Michael Brecker, John Ruocco, Kenny Werner, Eef Albers, Henk Meutgeert a.o.He was a 2006-nominee for the Jazz Hoeilaart Award in Belgium with his fusion quartet ThinkThank. With this project he recently released an excellent first album: "Pek Dek".More about Guy Nikkels:Guy NikkelsMore about ThinkTank and "Pek Dek":O.A.P. Records

The Meeting

She meets Italo Peruvian drummer/percussionist, composer, producer and sound engineer Luca Solari in 1998. Solari sees and hears what Mo also finally understands herself about her own talents and calling against her many services to other artists. He introduces her to American topvocalist Jennifer Weatherly (an incredible source of warmth and wisdom to Mo), bluegrass fiddle virtuoso Willy Wainwright, guitarists Nicolas Wetzell and Olivier Uldry, bass player Bob Harrison, banjo-player John Spangler, piano players Markus Fillinger and Al Blatter, as well as many other great musicians. Mo quits journalism and tours Europe, handling the on-the-road CD sales and promotion for Jennifer Weatherly & Willy Wainwright. With Wetzell, Peruvian composer and songwriter, she delivers her first project "Goin' Basic", initially a demo-project but, due to the demand, independently released as mini-CD in 2005. Mo finally allows herself to live up to her calling. Not so surprising: she has always "flourished late" in life.

Born in a cacaphony of sound...

Mo was born in the cacaphony of sound of a music & broadcast family in the region of Amsterdam. She remembers her mom (gifted with a beautiful voice) carrying her on her arm while singing and dancing on songs of Burt Bacharach, Louis Neefs, Nat 'King' Cole, Jacques Brel and many others: other influences include her DJ brother and his 70ies repertoire, her very well singing- and piano playing sister and her guitar-, clarinet- and piano playing dad who was also a widely respected sound engineer, specialized in live music engineering with Dutch National Broadcasting NOS. Mo's dad takes her along to broadcasts, recording sessions, concerts and introduces little Mo to radio, live sound and the world of music (classic, jazz & easylistening) with its national and international icons. Mo is soon taken - at age 6 - under the wings of classical piano virtuoso A. Benrath Bolman. In primary school she is asked to sing upfront in music class and she starts building upon her voice in a choir where she's put in the back in between 'the elderly' due to her vocal register.

From classical to jazz, funk, soul & rock...

Mo accompanies her fellow scholars on the piano in music class and plays/sings in theatre plays by the time she leaves primary school. The death of her piano master, with whom she had a very special connection, occurs when she's 17 and provokes a 100% shift towards singing... and the world that her DJ-brother introduced her to: jazz, funk, soul and rock. Mo pops up in the underground scene of the Amsterdam region (guest vocalist in several combos), starts backing vocalist work for a.o. producers Koopman & Huysdens ("The President") and, later on, becomes front lady of rock band Affengeil (Tilburg, south-NL). She tours with Dutch band Defauve for 2 seasons as tour manager (France & Spain). A European tour as vocalist with another band, Too Hot To Handle, brings her to Switzerland (1995).

Mo 2 board Sadolin's CVI

The renowned Danish vocal research pioneer, coach and instructor Cathrine Sadolin accepted Mo onto a 1-year programme for advanced and professional vocalists at the Complete Vocal Institute, the largest European institute specialized in everything that concerns the human voice and singing. Mo got completely convinced of the revolutionary concept of Sadolin's Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) and, moreover, of its results - "a riot against old myths" - when coached by Sadolin during a CVT weekend workshop in 2006. CVT is a fundamental system for vocal use that, until now, has been unknown and that was developed by Sadolin during 20 years of intense research. Info: http://www.sadolin.net
